Colour is variable, usually off-white or grey with streaks or blotches of green, brown, orange or white.


Found in the low intertidal, hiding in crevices, under shaded overhangs and around the holdfasts of seaweed on exposed shores. It is not uncommon but has a patchy distribution.
Another very cryptic species of chiton. Endemic to New Zealand it is found hiding in crevices, under shaded overhangs and around the holdfasts of seaweed on exposed rocky shorelines.
