Much larger and more aggressive than the Giant Squid. This squid has rotating hooks on the tentacle clubs and well developed teeth on the sucker rings. Both it and the Giant squid have ammonia in their tissues rendering them inedible to humans. It can weigh over 500kg and be8m long. A robust muscular squid, arms and tentacles are short in comparison to the body.

Have been caught off the Antarctic Peninsula but may live in the Southern Ocean closer to NZ. Deepwater to the surface.

It has been known to feed on Patagonian toothfish.

Commonly preyed on by Sperm Whales.
