Females grow less than 1m are slender with no scales, have light organs and a bioluminescent chin barbel to attract prey. Large mouths are filled with numerous dagger-like teeth of varying sizes. The males grow less thatn 5cm and are not often seen.
Eel like mid-water fish. Two species found in NZ, it is hard to distinguish between them.
