A large genus, well represented in NZ.Two forms one has large leaf like fronds the other has narrower many branched fronds. Grows to between 12 & 15 cm and is dull purple, occasionally reddish brown. It can feel quite rubbery.
Grows on intertidal rocks on open coasts.
Uses the sun's energgy for photosynthesis
Contains large quantities of agar, alginate and caragheenan, which are commonly used as gelling agents by humans.
