The reproductive organs can form large pimple like structures on the blades of this seaweed. As with many of the red which have this reproductive feature, this weed is sometimes called Turkish Bath Towel as it feels like a rough towel. When soaked in fresh water they produce a clear jelly which is used in food production as a gelling agent.
