Head and anterior body depressed. Body scales minute, randomly arranged. Pectoral fins with "squarish" appearance. Respiratory valve inside lower jaw with a dermal appendage expanded vertically in young, without appendage in adults. Its length is up to 45 cm.
Found on the continental shelf at depths down to 100 m.Very inactive, preferring to stay hidden under sand, mud and stones.<
When suitable food passes over it's large mouth they are swallowed with a short quick gulp, feeds on near bottom fishes.
