NZ Turbot have their eyes on the right side, British Turbot have them on the left. Their length is from 25 to 90 cm, and they are the largest flounder in New Zealand.


More common in the South. Inhabits shallow waters, generally at depth of less than 50 m. Juveniles gather in sheltered inshore waters, such as estuarine areas, shallow mudflats and sandflats, where they remain for up to two years


Small invertebrates.



A similar species to the British Turbot, one of the unsuccessful species that was brought to and released from Portobello Marine Station in the Early 1900's.
