A flatter shell than the ornate limpet. The most common, but most variable of NZ limpets. It can have 20-25 smooth, low radial ribs. In the north the ribs are indistinct and may be absent and the shell has radial streaks of brown and white, while in the south the shells are uniform and are dark grey with fine radial lines. The shell is often encrusted with algae or barnacles.

Found in the low intertidal to shallow subtidal zones. It is often found in large aggregations.

Grazes on algae on the rocks.

It is not as resistant to dessication as the ornate limpet and does not have a "home" site."
