The colour of this sponge varies from yellow to orange to blood-red., depending upon where they are found. Intertidal sponges are often blood-red, and subtidal sponges are more pinkish-red. The shape of the sponge can vary between these locations as well. In the intertidal they can be thin sheets, while in sheltered, silty areas they can form large conical forms.

They can be found in many locations, from mid tide down to the subtidal zones. They can also be found in wave exposed shores (usually hiding in crevices) or in sheltered more silty environments.

Sponges are filter feeders, feeding upon particles and plankton in the water.

Sponges can reproduce either by budding off new sponges or by releasing eggs and sperm into the water to create planktonic larvae, which drift with the currents until they find a suitable place to settle and grow.
