A tall, wiry plant, bronze-green in colour. It is ringed in intervals with blacksheathing leaf scales. The female flowers or spikelets and brown and rounded, while the males are narrow and pointed.


Does not like high salinities. Around the edges of mudflats etc. Occasionally inland in gumland scrub, along lake margins, fringing peat bogs or surrounding hot springs.


Uses sun's energy for photosynthesis.
