A very common saltmarsh or mudflat plant. It forms loose or dense clumps up to 75 cm tall. The plant is irregularly branched and has flowers at the tips.


Primarily coastal where it is found in salt marshes, brackish stream, lagoon and river margins, estuaries. While this plant is primarily coastal, it can also be found around geothermal vents at Lake Rotorua and Orakeikorako, and inland at the headwaters of the Rangitata River


Uses the suns energy for photosynthesis.
