Its length is between 10 and 20 cm. Red/brown and pinkish bands.

Found in south eastern Australia, and the North Island and northern South Island of New Zealand, at depths of between 5 and 100 metres. Solitary fish found in deep holes and rock ledges which rarely strays far from its refuge.

Feeds on small fishes, crabs and benthic invertebrates.
