This is a robust plant up to 30 cm high, fronds are irregularly branched, tufted and have a very distinctively zigzagged edge. The divisions are of even width, they are very narrow and are toothed on both margins with a midrib extending to the top. The holdfast is a cartilaginous dic. The colour is rich crimson and the texture is tough and pliable.
It is found from the low intertidal to upper subtidal on vertical faces on exposed rocky shores. Can be found at depths greater than 20m.
It produces its own food through the process of photosynthesis.
Has been placed at various times in the Genera Epineuron and Osmundaria.
