Asterocarpa coerulea
Ascidian, Solitary
Invertebrate
Chordata
Ascidiacea
Styelidae
Solitary ascidians are easy to spot due to the presence of two siphons, an inhalent one and an exhalent one. This species can often have a blue cast to the tunic.
They are found in the low intertidal to subtidal.
They are filter feeders
They are found in the urochordate group because as a juvenile they have a notocord, a hollow nerve cord and pharyngeal clefts (which remain in the adult) all of which are characteristics of chordate animals.
