This small crab species is made inconspicuous by their covering of grey hairs and the sediment matter that gets entangled in the hairs. They are sluggish and shy.
They are found in the low intertidal and subtidal zones but are not common in the intertidal zone in NZ.
They are scavengers feeding on dead animals and plants.
They are somewhat solitary in habit.
