Shell is dark on the outside with dashes of white and purplish brown and white inside. The shell is round and solid with distinct spiral groves. The outher lip has a sharp, black edge that may be flecked with white.


Very abundant right throughout NZ on sheltered to semi-exposed shores just above mid-tide level. Adults live on platforms and boulders while juveniles hide in crevices.


It grazes on seaweed.
