Plants are bushy with irregular dense branches, Grows up to 30cm high. Stipe is cylindrial to flattened and has pointed branch tips. The larger stipes can become hollow with age. It attaches with a small disc holdfast. The colour is dull grey to khaki brown, dries black. The texture is firm.


Found mid-intertidal on rocks on moderately exposed shores.


Uses the sun's energy for photosynthesis.
