A strong, heavy and inflated shell, with a destinctive triangular outline. Each valve has a strong, sharp ridge at each end and the whole valve is crossed by fine, distinct concentric lines. Shell is whitish to cream and can be purplish around the hinge beaks. Inside it is porcellain white to greyish cream, sometimes light purplish brown to purple. Has a thin, golden periostracum (skin) which is easily worn off.
Just below the surface in coarse to muddy sand in a range of situations.
